Every December, around forty kids at Kinder Hort Children’s Home in Nagakute—just outside Nagoya—pick out one gift they’d actually like to receive: a toy, school supplies, hobby gear, winter clothes. Nagoya’s international community has been stepping in as Secret Santa for years. People choose a gift from the list, buy it, wrap it, drop it off, and it gets delivered before Christmas.
The kickoff night is Saturday, December 6, at The Hungry Moose in Fushimi. Music from Brian Cullen and Sam, a warm room, a drink if you want one, and a chance to hear what this year’s project looks like.
How it works
The gift list goes live around December 6—each item linked directly on Amazon with the exact size, color, and details the child requested. You choose one, order it, wrap it, and bring it to The Hungry Moose by December 21. That’s it. The organizers handle delivery to the home before Christmas Eve.
It’s straightforward, which is part of why it's fun.
The evening
Brian Cullen has been playing around Nagoya long enough that he’s part of the city’s acoustic furniture—Irish, steady, with that particular way of making a minor chord feel lighter than it should. He’s released more songs than most people ever finish, but he’s never precious about it. Just guitar, voice, and phrasing that settles a room without effort. Brian's friend Sam Keith joins him for the evening—together they create the kind of backdrop where conversation moves easily and the night softens at the edges.
The Hungry Moose fits the occasion: Western grill, sports-bar energy but not loud, comfortable seating, a few minutes from Fushimi Station. It’s the kind of place where community gatherings feel natural rather than staged.
Show up for the joy of it!
You don’t have to sponsor a gift to come. This isn’t a fundraiser with speeches—just people gathering to give the project a human center. Showing up gives the whole thing more joy.
One specific gift for one specific kid. No performance, no pressure. Just the small, clear feeling of doing something useful in a season that often feels more chaotic than kind.
If you’ve been looking for some winter warmth–this is where you'll find it.
