International Christmas Party
It's been quite a year for Small World, which is now anything but small. The massive Supernatural Halloween event they pulled off in October far surpassed the drunken Absolute Halloween disgrace and the maladroit antics of The Sexy Halloween (R.I.P.).
In active response to such past attempts to connect the interfolk community of The NAG (as it was called in olden times), Small World's rooftop parties have been crushing it. And now they're closing out 2024 with a Christmas International Party that is exactly the kind of thing people need.
December 21 at Luggage: present exchange, Christmas menu, team games, and real prizes—USJ pair tickets, Häagen-Dazs gift cards, Starbucks cards. Bring a wrapped gift (¥1,000 max, optional), toss it under the tree, and you're in the running. DJs Architech, Keigo, Kensuke, NAOKI, and YUKI handling the music, which means it won't sound like every other international party in town.
Matthew Chima started Small World seven years ago because Nagoya's international scene felt fragmented and had a reputation problem.
"A lot of people saw international parties as cheap, binge-drinking pickup spots,"
Chima says.
"That image made it hard for Japanese communities and more serious music fans to take them seriously."
He and Marketing & Events Coordinator Keigo built something different—focused on quality, consistency, and actual community. It worked. Small World events now draw mixed crowds: Japanese and international, students and professionals, music heads and first-timers.
Small World also runs Chatterbox, their monthly language exchange that skips the usual introduction grind.
Chima's take on Nagoya:
"Despite its reputation for being cold, Nagoya's community is incredibly intimate. If you open yourself up to it, you'll find closer connections here than anywhere else."
