Prepare to Take the Stage at Theater Kids Night Out!
If you've been looking for a reason to dust off your show tunes knowledge—or finally perform one in public—Theater Kids Night Out gives you three hours to do both.
The variety show happens March 29 at Second Home, mixing scheduled performances with an open mic that takes up the final hour. The format: musical numbers from Broadway shows, poetry, improv, magic, performances by the queens from Club Metro, plus trivia testing how well you remember which show that song came from.
The open mic works from a set list the organizers provide—popular musical numbers with backing tracks ready. You pick the song that day and bring your voice. No need to source your own karaoke file or worry about key changes.
Between acts, there's trivia (musical theater themed, prize for the winning team) and a raffle with tickets at ¥100 each. Prizes include a free art workshop with Cat Halliday, half off a month of voice lessons at NAYUTAS Motoyama Music and Dance School, and a tour around Nagoya with local guide Diederik Potharst.
The performer lineup pulls from Nagoya's international community theater scene: Emily Bailey (regular in local productions), Steph Patterson from Bards in Solidarity doing improv, Joe Hindman handling magic and hosting duties, and the Metro queens. Bartender Dom is mixing musical-themed drinks for the night.
Advance tickets run ¥1000 through March 22, then ¥1500 at the door. If you're performing, you can get advance price until March 25. Doors open at 17:30 for the 18:00 start. One drink minimum.
The organizers (Faith Evans, Emi Kogawa, and Savanna Moen) are posting updates and the full open mic song list on Instagram at @geeksnightout if you want to plan what you'll sing.
