Free Sunday Soccer at Nagoya's Shonai Ryokuchi Park
Every Sunday afternoon at Shonai Ryokuchi Park, people gather for a free soccer kickabout that has been going for more than 23 years. There are no fees, no uniforms, no registration, and no need to commit beyond the afternoon you show up. It is open to all levels, from people easing back into exercise to regular players who just want a relaxed run-around without the structure of a team or league.
That simplicity is the whole point. This is not training, and it is not a formal club in the way many people would expect. It is closer to a standing weekly ritual: a dependable game in the park for whoever feels like playing. Players come and go, the group shifts from week to week, and the games keep happening because enough people keep showing up.

That kind of continuity matters when everyone comes from everywhere. In a city where a lot of groups depend on apps, schedules, and constant coordination, there is something reassuring about an activity that still works on the old system: pick a time, pick a place... and just show up.
If you are new to Nagoya, this is an easy way to meet people without forced introductions or small-talk-heavy socializing. If you have been here a while, it is the kind of recurring thing that can easily become part of your week.
It also helps that Shonai Ryokuchi Park is one of the city’s easiest parks to reach and one of the better places to spend a Sunday afternoon anyway. You do not need much more than clothes you can move in and a willingness to join in. No one expects match fitness. No one expects brilliance. The barrier to entry is low, which is probably one reason the group has managed to keep going this long.
If you're looking for a free, low-pressure way to move, play, and be around others without joining something overly formal, this is one's for you.
