Sketch Party Nagoya Returns to HopBuds on January 27
For people looking for a low-pressure way to engage with Nagoya’s art scene, Sketch Party just might be it. Once a month, artists and non-artists gather at HopBuds in Minami Ward to contribute to shared canvases. No portfolio required, no critique sessions—just markers, beer, and whatever you feel like drawing.
The format is collaborative instead of competitive, casual instead of curated. Nagoya's chapter has been running for years now, pulling in a mix of locals and internationals who range from illustrators to people who haven't drawn since elementary school.

How It Works
The setup is straightforward. Shared drawing surfaces are set up around the space. Grab a marker or pen and add whatever you want—doodles, patterns, detailed illustrations, abstract marks. Over the course of the night, the canvases fill up with layers of different styles and sensibilities. By closing time, you've got these dense, chaotic collaborative pieces that no single person could have made.
HopBuds provides the setting: craft beer on tap, relaxed atmosphere, dim lighting that makes the space feel more like a living room than a bar. The crowd skews creative but isn't exclusively artists. Conversations happen naturally around the drawing surfaces or at the bar.

January 27 Session
The January session lands on a Tuesday night. If you're easing back into routine after the New Year break, it's decent timing—low commitment, something different from the usual workweek reset. The format doesn't change month to month, which is part of the appeal. You know what you're getting.
The format is simple: bring your creativity, grab a marker or pen, and contribute to shared canvases alongside other art lovers. Every contribution, from intricate illustrations to abstract strokes, becomes part of a collective masterpiece. Don't worry if you're not a professional; the atmosphere is casual and welcoming. You might even discover your hidden talent!
