Dive into a Digital Yokai Wonderland
From July 19 to September 23, 2025, the Kanayama Minami Building Museum Wing (formerly the Nagoya/Boston Museum of Fine Arts) transforms into the world's first immersive digital art museum dedicated to yokai—Japan's supernatural beings born from myth and folklore.
Step inside and discover a world where centuries-old artworks such as Hyakki Yagyō (Night Parade of One Hundred Demons), Hyakumonogatari (One Hundred Ghost Stories), and legendary figures like oni, tengu, kappa, and tsukumogami are reimagined with cutting-edge 3DCG, projection mapping, holographic screens, and life-size sculptural models.
Eight Distinctive Zones, Endless Wonder
The exhibition features eight themed audiovisual zones that cover floor, walls, and ceiling with dynamic yokai scenes. More than 300 yokai appear throughout the show, brought to life through state-of-the-art digital technology. A highlight is the "Wild Dance of Yokai" room, where supernatural creatures whirl and leap with sound and light in a spectacular immersive display.

Walk with the Monsters: The Hyakki Yagyō Parade
Visitors can even take part in a participatory Hyakki Yagyō parade, walking alongside yokai in an immersive art space that blurs the boundary between legend and reality.
More Than Spectacle
This exhibition isn't just a visual thrill—it's also a deep cultural dive. With the cooperation of the Nishio City Iwase Bunko Library and Shodoshima's Yokai Art Museum, the event displays rare Edo and Meiji-period works, including ukiyo-e prints by masters such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi. Visitors can explore how yokai culture connects ancient mythology with today's pop culture.
Who's It For?
The exhibition is designed for everyone:
- Families with kids can enjoy interactive, nonverbal content that brings folklore to life
- Seniors will find accessible seating areas and cultural context that connects to traditional Japanese art
- International visitors will appreciate English and Japanese explanations of yokai culture
- Art and pop-culture fans will love seeing the connection between traditional folklore and modern creativity
Special Weekend Events
On weekends, special yokai greeting events take place where visitors can meet costumed performers representing oni, tengu, kappa and other supernatural beings.
Don't Miss It!
Yokai have traveled from folklore into film, anime, manga, and games—but here in Nagoya, you can step directly into their world. This exhibition brings them vividly to life through technology, history, and imagination. Whether you're after cultural discovery or an Instagram-worthy adventure, this new type of art entertainment exhibition allows both children and adults to "enjoy, learn, and experience" yokai culture in an unprecedented way.
The exhibition has already welcomed over 30,000 visitors and is being hailed as one of Nagoya's most exciting cultural events of the summer.
