Rooted & Rising
Our Stories.
Our Scholarship.
Our Future.
BWIJ — Black Women in Japan — holds its fourth national conference at Nanzan University on June 27 and 28.
Founded in 2014, BWIJ is a volunteer-run community connecting more than 4,500 women across the African diaspora living in Japan. Members include educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, artists, and healthcare professionals based in cities around the country.

Most of that connection happens online and through regional meetups, so this upcoming conference is a rare chance to meet in person with women from all over Japan and the world.
This year's theme is Rooted & Rising: Our Stories, Our Scholarship, Our Future, and the two-day program reflects it.
The conference includes keynote and research presentations by BWIJ members, as well as workshops on workers' rights in Japan, building a career in tech and design, and starting a business from concept to funding.
Personal and creative sessions fill out the schedule: journaling for mental health, a sister circle, a hip-hop dance workshop, a heels dance class, and a special book club edition.
A vendor marketplace features Black women-owned businesses, and an archival exhibit which documents the organization's twelve-year history.
Notably, Japanese language support is available through bilingual members.

The conference is for women of Black African descent and heritage living in, working in, or visiting Japan. Early bird tickets are on the group's Peatix Event Page until June 11 or while quantities last, with student rates for both days.
Student ID is required at the door.
Things get started the evening before with a free welcome event at The Hungry Moose in Fushimi on Friday June 26, 19:00 to 21:00. Food and drinks are available for purchase as you choose.
There will be a conference dinner at Paragon Restaurant in Motoyama on Saturday evening which is ticketed separately.
