Trick-or-Treating Comes to Heiwa Koen
Finding a family friendly Halloween Event can be tricky (lol) in the Nag. Most events for kids seem to happen indoors, at a shopping mall with a stamp card and a queue. Halloween in Heiwa takes it outside into the Autumn leaves and grass lawn of Heiwa Park - nestled amongst the largest cemetery in Nagoya. Boo!
Playpourri International, an English-language preschool in Chikusa-ku, is bringing back Halloween at Heiwa on Sunday, October 25.
Booths are set up at the top of the big lawn above Neko-ga-hora Pond, where the kids go "door to door" err... except the doors are folding tables.
Booths
Booths are run by families. When you register, you choose how to take part. You can host your own booth and decorate it however you like, share one with friends, or skip the booth and drop your candy at the check-in tent for Playpourri to hand out.
Wristbands
From 13:30 to 15:00, children wearing an official wristband work their way along the booths with their bags open.
Free Entry if You Register and Bring Treats
Entry is free if you register in advance, but every family has to bring something. The rule is at least 100 individually wrapped treats per family, so that everyone gets enough treats. And the treats don’t have to be candy. The organizers also suggest considering healthier alternatives such as senbei, packaged jellies, small cracker packets, or snacks from your home country.
That said, homemade food isn’t allowed for the sake of safety.
If you leave forget t0o bring treats, you can buy them nearby and come back to check-in, or just pay ¥2,500 to support the event instead. Families who haven’t registered can sign up at the check-in booth on the day for the same ¥2,500 per family.
Practicalities
Each household needs its own registration, listing everyone who will attend, babies included. If your child is coming with another family, you still have to register and contribute candy yourself, and the supervising family has to say so on their form.
Costume and Stickers
Every child needs a costume, a bag, a wristband, and an adult. Playpourri puts allergy stickers on children who need them, but parents are still expected to check every wrapper themselves.
Heiwa Koen is a public park, and other people will be taking photos. If you would rather your child stays out of the pictures, you can borrow a NO PHOTO lanyard at check-in. The park permit only covers registered families, so booth holders can’t hand candy to passing kids who aren’t part of the event.

NOTE: Family booths also can’t promote a business or school. Promotional booths cost ¥5,000 and require an invitation from Playpourri.
Rain Date
If it rains, the event moves to Sunday, November 1. Weather calls and the final schedule go out by email to whoever registered, so check your inbox the night before. Booth families set up from 12:00 to 13:00, and check-in for everyone runs from 13:00 to 13:30.
