Halloween In Japan - A Brief History
The idea of kids trick-or-treating never really caught on in Japan. Knocking on strangers' doors demanding candy while dressed as Anpanman was always going to be a tough sell in a country where even the delivery man apologizes for disturbing you.
The adults, however, immediately saw the potential. Japan already had a thriving cosplay culture. Halloween simply provided another excuse to dress up as a Pikachu salaryman or Godzilla applying for permanent residency. Cosplay lit the match. The nightlife industry supplied the gasoline.
By the turn of the century, foreign residents were turning Tokyo's Yamanote Line and Osaka's Loop Line into unauthorized rolling Halloween parties. In 2005, some 450 costumed revelers occupied three carriages of an Osaka commuter train, delaying services and giving ordinary passengers a rather different journey home than they'd paid for.
The railway parties eventually faded, but Halloween found new ways to inconvenience the general public. Shibuya became an annual gathering of inflatable penises, unemployed superheroes, and police officers quietly reconsidering their career choices.

Things got particularly lively in 2018 when revelers overturned a small truck. Today, Shibuya bans nighttime street drinking in designated areas year-round.
Nagoya had Oasis 21. The costumed crowds arrived, and eventually, so did the barricades. This year, selected areas of Oasis 21 and Hisaya-odori Park will be closed from 17:00 on October 30 and 31. Oasis 21 won't even switch on its famous rooftop illumination on Halloween night. (See more about the announcement HERE)

"Halloweekend" October 30 and 31
Still, there's plenty happening elsewhere. Aichi Connection is organizing "Halloween Weekend" a two-night pub crawl across 15 participating Nagoya bars, pubs, and nightclubs on October 30 and 31. You could always make a weekend of it. Just remember, when moving between venues, the idea is to dress like a monster, not behave like one.

If you'd rather spend Saturday night at one big party, the circus moves underground.
The Supernatural Halloween
October 31 at Club MAGO & Live & Lounge VIO
Small World's Supernatural Halloween 2026 takes over Club MAGO and Live & Lounge VIO in Shinsakae on Saturday, October 31, with nine hours of music, live-band karaoke, dance performances, shibari (the Japanese art of rope bondage), and enough elaborate costumes to make an Osu cosplay gathering look like a business seminar.
For the newly arrived, Supernatural is one of Nagoya's established international Halloween gatherings. The organizers report that more than 520 people attended last year and promise an even bigger production this time.
Small World describes the event as legendary.
Fine.
But underneath the theatrical nonsense, there's a friendly international crowd, and that's much of the attraction. Halloween is one of the few nights in Nagoya when you can strike up a conversation with someone dressed as a homicidal clown and reasonably expect to make a new friend.
Seoul Comes to Shinsakae
The serious musical business happens at MAGO, where Silly Silky and yunji arrive from South Korea to headline the night.

Silly Silky began performing as YESEO in 2016, building a reputation for melodic, genre-blending electronic music. She writes, arranges, and produces her own material, moving between alternative pop, dreamy electronic sounds, and house music.

yunji brings a different flavor, drawing on UK garage, breaks, and bass music. It's the sort of sound that makes standing still feel like a personal failure.
She's played SXSW London in both 2025 and 2026, toured North America with K-POP ScreaM in 2024, and performed a guest set for London's NTS radio this June. She hasn't exactly been sitting at home waiting for Nagoya to call.
The two have worked together before. yunji remixed Silly Silky's track "Seoul" for the silkysmooth 05 release in March.
Give it a listen. It won't improve your dancing, but you'll at least have some idea what you're dancing badly to.
Backing them up are twelve Nagoya DJs: AKANE, ARCHITECH, FukuChan, ISAJI, Keigo, KOMA, Lalue, maru, MITTUN, NAOKI, SanFan, and Yuki Matsubara.
Next Door, Things Get Strange
VIO is where the evening abandons any pretense of a coherent theme.
Super Karaoke Brothers provide live, full-band karaoke, meaning actual musicians accompany your efforts instead of the usual electronic backing track.
Your Bon Jovi gets real drums, real guitars, and nowhere to hide. It takes courage to get up and sing in front of strangers. Arguably, it takes more courage to be the band.
SM Show Bar The H brings a shibari performance, showcasing the Japanese art of rope bondage. A dance showcase organized by Kaoru and rin adds another collection of performers to the evening.
At 01:00, Pop Up Palooza takes over VIO with the Palooza Room, effectively starting another party just as sensible people might begin considering their journey home.

Dress Like You Mean It
Supernatural has made elaborate costumes part of its identity, along with decorations, activities, and the general understanding that subtlety has no particular place in a Halloween celebration.
You don't have to arrive looking as though you've escaped from a Hollywood special-effects department. But with this crowd, a pair of plastic vampire teeth may leave you feeling slightly underdressed.
This year, Studio LFOCUS is providing a professional photo booth, welcome news for anyone who has invested serious time, money, or questionable adhesives in their appearance.
Three weekends of glue and fabric deserve better than a blurry photograph taken by someone whose phone lens hasn't been cleaned since 2023.
Get your photos taken early. By 04:00, gravity and perspiration may have made their own adjustments.

The Price of Bad Decisions
Advance admission is ¥3,000, plus a 2% online ticketing fee, or ¥4,000 at the door. The discounted four-ticket bundles for ¥10,000 are already listed as sold out.
Everyone must also purchase a ¥600 drink ticket on entry. Apparently, even the undead have to contribute to the bar.
The event is 18+, and photo ID is required. Regardless of how much latex, face paint, or reconstructive makeup you've applied, bring something official that proves you're old enough to be there.
MAGO is about three minutes from Exit 2 of Shinsakae-machi Station. Getting there is straightforward. Getting home at five in the morning while wearing a cape is a separate logistical challenge.
The last time Halloween fell on a Saturday was 2020. COVID had other plans.
Civilization has made some progress.
